Why your ratings do not simply add up
The VA does not add ratings together. It combines them using what many veterans call "VA math." Your highest rating is applied first. Each additional rating is then applied only to the part of you the VA still considers non-disabled. A 50% rating followed by a 30% rating is not 80%. The 30% applies to the remaining 50%, adding 15 for a combined value of 65%, which the VA rounds to 70%.
This is why many veterans sit just below a rating level that would meaningfully change their monthly compensation, and why an overlooked secondary condition or an increased rating on one condition can matter so much.
